I still get similar comments after my encounter with a stray dog and my 
decision to spare it resulting in the untimely demise of my '99 ST.

My answer to this is to ask the person if they have ever been in a car 
accident. Most people have and they usually sustained some form of injury as a 
result. So when they say yes, I ask if they decided to give cars away as a result, 
because cars are, after all, dangerous. I'm usually met with a very baffled 
look and the reponse is usually "Oh I didnt think of it like that..."

Peoples perceptions are of no end of amusement for me.
