Well I did the job. The upper and lower bearings cost me ~$62 from my
dealer (in stock, CalBMW Mt. View, CA). Their service department quoted
$380 in labor. That really helps motivate. All in all the work was not to hard.
The biggest problem was the lower inside bearing and race. I could NOT get
it off the "spindle". I ended up taking it to an independent bike shop (HK
Cycle, Livermore, CA), $20. It was not easy for them. They did not have a
bearing puller for the job. But heat, bearing spreader, pry bars, and
hammers got it off. A press did the job of installing the new bearing.
The outside lower race was easy to remove and not too hard to tap into
place. The one piece, sealed upper bearing was much the same.
I did not try and short cut anything. I removed the tank, forks, and upper
fairing. I just moved the bars and upper triple clamp out of the way while
working. Adjusting the new bearings was a bit difficult, only because my thin
30mm wrench does not fit to well. So holding the nut while I tightened the top
bold was a pain. I had to repeat the process a couple of time before I could
put all the torque without tighten the bearings. You really need a thing
wrench.
