Marc, I had the same thing on my 99 ST. I checked with some tyre people and 
their explanation was that the tyres are the same profile (Bridgestone 020's) 
but the front wheel squeezes the front more than the rear. Therefore, the edges 
of the tread pattern"wrap around" more. So the edge of the tread on the front 
can be almost vertical when viewed from the front of the bike, whereas the 
rear edge is still at a bit of an angle. 

To see this for myself, it was suggested that I get a bunch of willing 
helpers to slowly lay the bike over while I observe the edges of the tyres and the 
points at which they are in contact with the road relative to each other. 
So far I have not found said bunch of willing helpers.

Any thoughts on this theory?
