[ST] Re: How to fix coolant/radiator leak? (Steve Lawler)

I'd also double check the rad hose on the left hand side that is a little too close to a bolt. I had a spot where the bolt started to eat into the hose.

Here's my two cents worth :

When I got my RS I wasn't too excited by the digital Speedo. I've become really comfortable with it now, and a month or so ago when I rode the new ST1050 I found the analogue speedo irritating and difficult to get a quick fix on the speed.

I've been converted - I like the simplicity of it, although I wouldn't go for a digital revcounter!

cheers

Garry,
Before dumping any foreign substances in there, check all the hose
clamps and the radiator cap. I had a leak a while back, also on the left
side. It was coming from one end of a hose; tightening the hose clamp
stopped the leak.

I've been smelling coolant when stopped at a light and the motor is hot
(2002 RS, 38K miles). I assumed I had a small leak somewhere that was slowly
evaporating and when stopped it rose straight up instead of being blown away
by the wind. I think it's getting worse and I have a feeling it's on the
left side of the radiator based on some stains on the engine case. So my
question is:

Is it safe or wise to use car radiator leak plugging stuff like Barre's Leak
(sp?) or similar? You know, the stuff you dump in a car radiator to fix
small leaks? I believe that some radiator leaks can be repaired by
brazing/soldering, but I've no experience with that. Of course I could pony
up for a new one, but fear that would be huge money. Yes, I'm a cheap bastid
that likes to save a buck if I can...

Garry

I second Brett's suggestion to remove it and have it repaired. A friend of mine just sent his radiator to http://www.motorcycleradiators.com/ and was very happy with them

When my ST's radiator sprung a leak I picked up a used one on Ebay

Good point Steve. A radiator leak should be fairly obvious.

Personally I would stay away from any additive like Barre's Leak.

Here's a thread I bet no-one has kicked off before:

I recently switched from wearing MQP cordura jacket plus jeans to a nice set of RST leathers.

At the moment I wear a set of long johns underneath the leather to keep warm, but I can see that will be too hot in summer.

I asked around, and was told by more than one guy that nothing beats wearing thick stockings under the leathers. I'm struggling to get my ego & brain around that one - just buying them presents some interesting problems.

I can see the wife having a few things to say.

Anyone tried it ? [ I'll be even more impressed if you respond to the list! ]

cheers

When I lived in Jo'burg, many of the m/cycle traffic cops used to wear them
under those strange jodhpur uniform pants. OTOH, they used to wear
them in the _winter_ for warmth. One or two of the guys on the Sunday
breakfast runs to Hartebeestpoort tried them, IIRC, and reported they were
comfortable and warm. But there was always the underlying fear: "If I
have an accident, will the ambulance guys take me to hospital or leave me
lying in the street?"

lol
ive seen something on another forum but have no personal experience
myself. [nudge nudge wink wink]

What i have been using is 'under armour' that is used by sportsmen.
The heat gear is great for summer and keeping you cool but the winter
gear is superb. You get it in the sports shops and is thin and lets
the leathers get on easily.

I use Cool Stuff with great success. They definitely help on those sweltering race days on the track. I don't have any experience in the cold yet, but they say it's works. It's a phase change material to regulate body temperature.

To those that made the oil switch from Mobil 1 15w-50 "red cap" to the new
15w-50 "gold cap", are you still doing ok? Any problems with clutch slip or
otherwise?

I picked up a jug over the weekend and want to make sure everyone is still
doing ok before rolling the dice myself. And I guess without the
"MA" (Motorcycle Approved) marking on the label it may be a bit of a dice
roll.

I've put over 3000 miles on "Gold Cap" with no ill effects that I can tell. I plan on using it on an on-going basis...
