I don't think they break spontaneously, they need a jolt, or an attempt
to reconnect without lubing the sealing washer.  Having said that they
could have been weakened previously by handling, and just gave up the
ghost when you were out on the road.
Replacement is a doddle when you get the parts.

After about 1K miles in the first month with the new (to me) ST, I've 

been afflicted with the infamous fuel fitting leak!  I knew before I  
bought the bike that the recall wasn't done yet, and planned to  
"sometime" stop by the Triumph dealer for the recall.  Strange how it 

suddenly started leaking, I wonder if my short high-speed run down  
the interstate had anything to do with that?

The worst part was that I noticed the leak 30 miles from home.  What  
to do, take my chances with a tow truck or take my chances with a  
fuel leak?  My brother, who used to work at a Triumph dealership,  
said he'd never actually heard of any bikes burning down from the  
fuel leak.  I figured it had already been leaking a little, probably  
for a day or two (although it was leaking enough now to be  
noticeable), and hadn't caught fire yet.  I figured most of the gas  
would evaporate in the wind off the hot motor, so I rode it home.  I  
should have parked the bike outside as appropriate punishment, but  
didn't think about it last night and now the entire house smells  
strongly of gasoline!  It also now leaks when the bike is not  
running, before it leaked only while there was fuel pressure.

I've ordered the fuel fitting kit from Team Triumph, should be here  
in time for me to install before the weekend.  I could have taken the 

fuel hoses to the Triumph dealer for the recall, but I can't go until 

Saturday and they are closed this Saturday.

It is going to be a long few days without riding.  Is there any  
chance that disconnecting and reconnecting the fittings will help  
them stop leaking?  Or do they crack or something?


On a somewhat amusing note, on the way to a friend's house last night 

(where the leak was first noticed), as I blasted down the I95  
entrance ramp, I saw an old ratty full-dresser touring bike of some  
kind (Harley interstate or old Gold Wing or something) on the highway 

not far ahead of me.  I figured I'd quickly catch and pass him even  
after slowing down to normal highway cruising speed.  Imagine my  
surprise when as I slowed down to 90-95, he was pulling away!  I sped 

back up, and followed him at 100-110 for several miles.  I was going  
to pull up a little closer to see what kind of bike it was, since I'd 

never seen one of those maintaining that kind of speed, but had to  
drop back because my friend on his Daytona 600 was suddenly nowhere  
to be found.  Turns out he was running 10K rpm to keep up, and  
decided he didn't want to sustain those rpm over a long distance.   
Telling him he had 4K more rpm to go, and I'd have no problem running 

6K of my 10K rpm all day long didn't seem to change his mind...
