Re: [ST] 05 ST Fuel Economy

Very early I formed the opinion that the 1050 engine in the ST is a thirsty beast. Perhaps this will change when Triumph do other things with this motor such as the new Tiger.

The fuel economy characteristics remind me of my '74, 5 litre V8 Kingswood ute (pickup). Around town, in stop start traffic it loved a drink. On the open road, in cruise mode it was quite respectable. With loads of grunt, it passed everything on the road except a servo (gas station).

On our ride to Bombala a few weeks ago (pre 10k service) we covered about 1500kms and the kilometers per tank went up dramatically. I alternated between cruising and trying to keep up with the ex A grade motorcrosser aboard the well sorted RS. I never quite got there but I did discover how good the ST is at full noise in long sweepers. I topped up at every fuel stop as my girls CBR6 gets about 220kms to reserve but I calculated that I would get about 450kms to dead empty, versus 250kms commuting. On the way home we got caught in banked up traffic resulting from major roadworks. By the end of that 45 min, 6km crawl, the ST had swallowed about a quarter of a tank!

As I'm sure we all do, you get a feel for what your fuel gauge is telling you. On my '99 ST the fuel gauge didnt move from full until the actual level dropped to half. After that the gauge dropped quite rapidly. On the '05, with the fuel gauge being in a series of bars on the LCD display, I have become used to the first two bars disappearing by about 50kms. The rest dropping quite rapidly after that. Post 10k servce, I did some running around today and hit 100kms on the present tank and the first bar has just gone out. If this trend continues I'm looking at 300kms to reserve commuting and 450 - 500kms touring.

I'm baffled as to how there can be such a marked improvement in fuel economy, after a minor service with no real discernable difference in performance, either good or bad. If anything, it feels a little smoother, but the characteristic popping and burbling is very present when slowing down, so if there was any change to the mapping I'm guessing it is minor.

I'll keep monitoring and post my findings.

Brett,
This is very interesting to me. I have a 00 Sprint ST.

I get a consistent 50 miles per gallon(US). I pretty much get the
same mileage if I'm commuting or riding long distance.
If I converted that right that is 80.5 Km per gallon(US) or 21.24 km per
liter.
I typically get 236 miles (379 K) before the low fuel light comes
on. At this point I have about .6-.8 gal left in the tank. I have never
ran it out of gas but I usually figure I can go 265 miles on 1 tank (5.5
gal(US)-21 Liters) of gas. I ride a lot with a guy who has a R1100 RS
BMW and he can usually go 350 miles on a tank. I'm not sure what his
tank capacity is though. But I always have to stop for gas first. He
also has an R1 Yamaha and when he is riding it, he has to stop first.
I used to have 2000 Indian Scout with an 1442 cc. V twin engine and a
3.5 gal gas tank. I could only go 120 miles till I was completely out of
gas.
One of the reasons I choose the Triumph was its gas mileage and tank
capacity. I am currently planning a ride from California to Tenn. about
2500 miles (4023K) one way and am planning to do it on 10 tanks of gas.

On the Triumph UK home page it says the tank capacity of the 2006 Sprint
is 5.2 US gal or 20 Liters. So if I did the math right, you are going
250 Kms (155 miles) on about 17-18 liters (4.5-5 gal) (155/5= 31 miles
per gal) (250Km/18L = 13.8 KM per liter).

That 1050 engine is a thirsty puppy.

In addition over here in the states most insurance companies have a
magic mark of 1000 ccs. Their rates take a big jump if you cross that
magic number.

Is most of your riding on the flat or in the mountains?

$1.40 per litre. I havent spoken to the dealer to find out if there is any
significant change in the latest tune to account for this. Its definately
something I've never experienced before.
