[ST] Larry Grodsky

Such a shame that Larry of all people was killed in a motorcycle accident. I
never met the man, but many of our guests had taken his safety courses. This
will be a real blow to the staff at Rider as well as his close friends and
family. We can only hope his legacy of motorcycle safety continues on.

We had our first deer/motorcycle colision last summer after 8 years of
business and it was a real eye opener. Luckily our guest who is an extremely
experienced rider (and is a big Triumph fan) was not seriously hurt. But it
happened in an instant and we wrote off a brand new Tiger with 483km on the
clock. It could easily have ended as Larry's accident did.

I'm not sure if there is any real defense against deer. Any suggestions
would be appreciated!!We've equipped our bikes with deer whistles, but I'm
not convinced they do any good. We don't do any riding during dusk or at
night (when deer are most active) and I think that helps, but we still see
enough deer during the day for concern.

The rugged, heavily forested mountains of BC and the Alberta rockies tend to
keep the deer populations down somewhat, but some of the most beautiful
roads we travel in Montana, Oregon and California seem to have plenty of
dead deer at the side of the road as evidence of the looming danger. We talk
about deer in our safety meeting and how they can travel in packs so don't
fixate on the first deer you see and to slow at the first sign of any deer.
Is there any steps or suggestions that any of you have for us to pass onto
our guests?

Tragic that Larry's death brings out these questions, but that's what he did
for a living.
Our thoughts go out to his family and friends...
