[ST] Exhaust pipe is in the way of the rear axle

Hello,
I've got an '01 Sprint ST (BRG) and I'm attempting for the first time to
remove both wheels to take to the shop and have new tires mounted. I picked
up a 5" awl in my rear tire the other day!
The problem is that I can't fit a socket on the rear axle nut because my
exhaust pipe is too close to the nut (I lowered the pipe from it's stock
position to accommodate the hard side bags). I thought I could take the
bolts off that secure the pipe to the side rail and just pull the pipe away
from the wheel a bit but that's not going to work because there's another
metal strap that holds the pipe in place underneath the bike (near the
center stand).
A wrench may fit but I'm not sure I have the brawn to loosen it and I'm
afraid of stripping the nut anyway.
I searched the archives but couldn't find anything on this so either I'm not
putting in the correct search criteria or it's a no-brainer so no one ever
had to post a silly question like this.
Thanks for any help,
Joni
