The force required to break the nut loose can be considerably more
depending on a number of factors: corrosion, rust, loctite, etc..  The
"impact" can overcome them. Mike's excellent description not
withstanding, there's nothing magic about an impact wrench.  You can
achieve the same thing with a standard breaker bar and a large hammer.
The impact tool is just makes the task easier.
