Another advantage of impact drivers is that they can use the inertia of the gearbox etc. to provide the countering force to hold the shaft still and thus break the stiction on the thread.  The down side is that it could potentially damage said components e.g. break off pinion teeth etc.

The force required to break the nut loose can be considerably more
depending on a number of factors: corrosion, rust, loctite, etc..  The
"impact" can overcome them. Mike's excellent description not
withstanding, there's nothing magic about an impact wrench.  You can
achieve the same thing with a standard breaker bar and a large hammer.
The impact tool is just makes the task easier.
