I disagree.

Using the kill switch has never FUBARed any ECUs that I am aware of, but
it can cause a temporary rough-running condition that is almost always
remedied by shutting the bike off properly with the key and then
re-starting.

The ECU normally stores sensor readings when the bike is powered down
with the key to aid in the next re-start.  When you power down with the
kill switch the ECU doesn't get a chance to save this info.  IIRC, the
crank position sensor is one of the key elements, but other sensor data
may be involved as well.  Many owners complain that Sprints motors turn
over quite a few times before they fire up.  I believe this is
deliberate, and that the ECU is noting crank position so it can
correctly fire the plugs in the correct order.

Moral of that story is to only use the kill switch in an emergency.  Now
I do know that many seasoned bikers routinely use the kill to shut down
before turning off the key, but this habit probably pre-dates
ECU-controlled, fuel-injection bikes.  In any event the Hinckley
Triumphs are sensitive to this issue.

Also many owners, me included, reported experiencing a mysterious
problem that occurred even when their Sprint was powered off properly
with the key.  In my case it occurred two or three times on my '99 ST,
and only during the first few months of ownership while the bike was
being broken in.  In my case the problem would only surface after a cold
engine was run for a very short time (say for a jaunt to the corner
store), turned off for a few minutes, and then re-started.  The bike
would run like a bag of shit (no power and difficult to keep running at
low RPM -- like it was only firing on 2 cylinders).  If you shut down
with the key and re-started, the problem would always disappear.
Perhaps the ECU just needed a master reset or it needed to re-think the
firing sequence.  Then the problem would disappear for weeks/months.
After awhile the symptom disappeared, never to return.  There was even a
suggestion that some other part (idle air control valve comes to mind)
was sticking and that with time it would loosen up on its own, perhaps
explaining why it was typical that the issue only occurred early in the
life of most bikes.  My '03 RS has never exhibited this symptom and I
have a hunch that Triumph silently exorcized the culprit.  I'm guessing,
but I'll bet no post-'02 Sprints had this issue.
