[ST] Forks, numbers and old movies (Gas Light)

When I look in the manual it says fork travel on an ST is 127mm (5 inches).
When I measure the distance between my fender and the fairing it runs from
about 5.25 to 5.5 inches with the bike on the center stand and about half an
inch more with the front wheel hanging free.  I measure about 0.625 inches
from the top of my fork tube to the top of my triple tree.  

On another thread on another site two guys are mounting a radar detector
antenna that is somewhere between an inch to an inch and three quarters
thick under the fairing.  I was a bit concerned over the mounting position
because I know it is definitely possible to bottom ST forks.  They say they
measure 6.25 inches between the fender AND the antenna.  That's somewhere
between 2 and 3 difference between their 04's and my 02.  Any ideas on what
is going on here????
