Re: [ST] Speaking of New Bikes...

Hey, Joel -

I rode a Ulysses and XB12 Lightning about a year ago in Copper Mountain,
CO at CycleFest. The chassis of both were fantastic. The short wheelbase
of the Lightning especially was a total kick in the ass. The Ulysses
needed a little more effort on the bars than I was expecting to roll
over into corners, but once there would hold its line very nicely, and
both were really composed over mid corner bumps and such. I didn't get a
chance to do any trail riding with the Ulysses, but with that riding
position, fire trails and moderately rough mountain passes should be a
piece of cake. I don't think it'd like the really rough stuff tho.

I was, however, really disappointed by the 1200cc HD V2. I really had to
keep the thing on the boil to get any power out of it, doing most of my
riding above 5k rpm (keep in mind redline is at 6500 with a god awful
harsh rev limiter at 6750). It was smooth enough, but just felt
completely gutless ridden back to back with my ancient VFR700 (almost
HALF the displacement!) on the same mountain roads. Thankfully it's got
a really super slick transmission - you get to use it quite a bit.

YMMV, you oughta' go ride one. Maybe I rode a couple of detuned demo
bikes or something. It's worth a test ride just to toss 'em around a
bit, they're really fantastic handlers. IMO, the Lightning is still one
of the best looking Hooligan bikes out there (behind the S3 of course).

I'm glad all you guys are looking at "upgrading." Maybe that'll bring
your STs into my price range... heh... I'm just waiting for that perfect
Silver '01+ ST for under $5k. Blue or Black would work too.

The Buells are something that I really want to know more about. They
look so cool, and supposedly perform well. The Lightning just got a
good review from Motorcycledaily.com. My only problem with them is the
motor. I think it'd be a no-brainer if they had the V-Rod motor.
