Re: [ST] Another low speed fall...

John and List,

I didn't explain myself very well. The red switch on the right bar is
basically a kill switch. It is supposed to be used only in emergencies to
stop the engine. The key is supposed to be used to stop the engine under
normal circumstances.

Reference: 2004 Sprint Owners Handbook, pg. 31 - Emergency Stop Switch

(Begin Quote)
NOTE:
* Although the engine stop switch stops the engine, it does not turn off all
of the electrical circuits. Ordinarily, the ignition switch should be used
to stop the engine."
(End Quote)

It has been discussed here a few times. Using the bar switch has been
compared to pulling the plug on a PC. Don't know how it applies to Macs. :)

My personal opinion is Triumph should have designed the system to use the
same switch on the right bar for normal shutdowns and emergency shut downs.
It's a learned response to turn the key. In an emergency I don't want to
reach for the key when I should just move my right thumb.

The SV650 I had used the bar switch to shut it off. That's my only other
EFI motorcycle reference. Using the key may be much more common now.

I went out and tried to start the bike with the emergency stop switch in the
off position. It doesn't turn over. I'm sure it didn't last summer after I
dropped it either. That must be why I thought the battery was dead.

p.s. I the time it has taken me to go out and pus the starter button and get
the owners manual the weather has gone from sunny to dark and raining. It's
been more then two weeks since I have been able to ride. Looks like I have
awhile more to wait.

Rob,

Okay, I'll bite ....what do you mean:

" Second, I really don't like the way Triumph decided
to use a kill switch instead of an off button."

Seems to be one and the same, either way it kills the
motor, and either way if you forget it, the motor wont
start. Either way, it's still a "doh" on the part of
the user.....

:-)

Am I correct in the difference being one will allow
the motor to crank and one will not ?

John
