Re: [ST] Recall on ST '01 and '02 rear wheel bearings

I had to do a job to unstake the nut, and I would think that the metal would be weak from staking, un-staking, and re-staking. I don't have any direct knowledge that this is horribly unsafe, but it didn't sound good to me. I ordered one through my Triumph dealer, and had it within a week. Also, the way the nut is threaded, you can't make a different part of the flange end up at the stake spot. I can't say that the hub will fall apart - but for the cost (and the obvious amount of force on the drive shaft from accelerating and engine braking), I just decided to get the new one.

Matt,
Since my 02 ST is sitting in the garage wheels off waiting for new tires to arrive, I thought I just might grease the rear wheel bearing. I don't see any obvious reason why you couldn't just re-stake the axle nut, but since you mentioned it, do you know of any harzards in doing so. I'm not that cheap but I'm sure I'm going to have to order one and that could take forever.
Thanks,
Rod
