Re: [ST] Wrap-up of Roethlis-what-his-name?

The way I understand the standards set by DOT, SNELL, ANSI, STANDARDS AUSTRALIA, etc are that they are a minimum. So any item, be it helmet, seat belt, airbags etc, that carries that mark meets the set criteria as defined in the relevent standard. A manufacturer can choose to exceed that standard, but cannot advertise the fact.

Much of what we pay for in top of the line helmets such as SHOEI or ARAI or SUOMY is for the additional features from wind tunnel testing for low noise, light weight materials, removable/replaceable comfort liners, airflow systems, etc So from that point of view I would say my current Shoei ZII is a better helmet than my first AGC as it lighter, more comfortable, has better vetilation.

I always recommend staying away from helmets without the standards mark. For example they are illegal to use in Australia, but can be sold quite legally. Every now and then a story pops up where someone has bought one as it was cheap. A get off ensues and said person ends up with head injuries. AS if the impact wasnt bad enough, the dodgy helmet shatters and pieces of fibreglass are embedded in the wearers skull.

In answer to your question - I would say you could argue that back and forth forever from many points of view. But I reckon you are quite fond and definately very attached to your head.

As part of our instruction to new motorcycle riders, the advice is to buy the best helmet you can afford that carrys the standards mark.

Brett.

So, by that axiom, does a $500+ Arai, Shoei, or Suomy protect my head better
than my much less expensive HJC? I guess I don't like my head.
