You don't think it's easier to assemble by machine?  A similar but much
more maintenance-friendly technique is to use a tab washer.  I sits
under the nut with a tab in the key on the shaft then you bend the outer
tab over the nearest flat when the nut is tightened.  You (may) have to
replace the tab washer but nothing else.

Excellent explanation Matt.  I still don't know why they didn't use a
cotter pin type of solution or some other key method.  Throwing away and
then finding such an odd nut is p-ss poor engineering in my book.  Also,
that isn't the only nut I have had fun and games with.  My front axle
was a sweetheart too.
