Re: [ST] OLD BIKES IN OZ - MORE.

G'day again..
Apart from a bunch of Suzukis and Yamahas, road and dirt,
the other really " note " worthy bike I had was a 1949 AJS
(G80)500 single. Was the last of the rigid frame models
before they came out with the "jam pot" shockies. I bought
it as a project when I was about 24 for A$200 from a guy
who had it and lots of parts stored under his garage. He
had started to fix it but the owner never returned - even
had a new, wrapped in greese paper, Preston piston and
rings.

Took about 6 months and a lot of work to get it back to
original showroom condition. Always had some sort of
problem with the magneto, but apart from that it was a
beautiful bike. Sold it after about 18 months ( A$1500 )
coz most of my mates had jap bikes that left me way behind.

Saw it at bike show, swap meet, at Windsor (west of Sydney)
about 20 years later, guy was selling it for
A$ 5500, so not such a great appreciation in value - but
Oh, what a sweet note that had too.. :) On manual ignition
retard, seemed like it would fire once every 100 yards.
Sorry to bore your with non ST stuff, but at least it's
British..
Cheers / Harry...

ps; Brett, expect the 250 Duke, it was even metalflake
silver, would be worth many thousands now, guess
between $5K up to $8 or $9K, maybe even more..
