Re: [ST] '05 wouldn't start

Here are some pictures of Ken's air filter and plugs. As Ken mentioned, him and I have been running the same roads and my filter with 10k miles looks just fine (nothing to even shake out/off). Any thoughts on the cause - this looks terrible...

Hello all! I am new to this list but am hoping for
some info from fellow owners of the new 1050. I have
had mine for almost a year now and am about to turn
10K miles. I went to start her up this past Sunday and
it just turned and turned, not even a hint of
ignition. I pulled the tank and air box to get to the
plugs and noticed an excessive build-up of a dark
almost powdery black crud all over the edges of the
filter and a larger build-up located in the middle of
the filter (between 2 to 3 inches in diameter with
some areas mounded with crud). I pulled the plugs,
they were covered with cabon build-up (quite fouled).
I replaced the plugs and filter and she runs like a
dream again. My dealer suggested that this could have
been from the blow-by from the tranny back to the air
box, however that is connected to the clean side of
the filter and would flow unrestricted back to the
throttle bodies. The only tube connected to the dirty
side of the filter appears to be like an EGR, as the
recirc tubes come off the top of the engine and pass
through a valve connected to a sensor in the exhaust
piping by the right peg and then dumps back into the
fresh air stream feeding the filter. I have had my
questioning the factory mapping since the dealer
installed the off-road pipe and associated map. I know
Triumph is tight lipped about this stuff ... if memory
serves correct it took them 3 years to resolve the
mapping when the TT600 was introduced. I just want to
know if this is a common problem or is there something
I need fixed on my bike .... I still have a year left
on warranty, so I want to use it if needed.

Sorry this is getting long but I would like to hear
from anyone who has had similar problems or
experienced fouling of their engines. I think my
dealer is tweeking me .... there is no reason to clog
a filter and foul plugs in less than 10 K miles. And
in case you all are wondering, I have spent the last
4.5K miles riding with a buddy on an early model
sprint. I just saw his plugs and filter earlier today,
and they look as good as new ... no BS. So riding the
same styles and on the same roads, My new ST Fouled
itself and the old one is clean as a wistle..... any
ideas?

-Ken
