[ST] Sprint ST gas tanks

This question comes about because of a comment I heard on the KLR list 
about plastic gas tanks being illegal for road bikes. Since the Sprint 
tanks aren't metal I assumed they are plastic. Are they, and if so, 
what kind of plastic?
