They are plastic.  Some kind of non-metallic plastic.....

It is hard to know what kind of plastic they are.  It is white inside but
that doesn't help much in the identification.

I haven't seen a recycle logo on it anywhere....

I suspect that the KLR listers are wrong.

This question comes about because of a comment I heard on the KLR list
about plastic gas tanks being illegal for road bikes. Since the Sprint
tanks aren't metal I assumed they are plastic. Are they, and if so, what
kind of plastic?
