Re: [ST] chain and sprocket time

I'm finding this email thread beneficial. I currently have 49k on my rear sprocket (it actually looks good for the mileage), and about 25k on my front and about 25k on my chain. I'm running a DID chain and it's held up great. Don't remember the exact one, except it has the gold colored links.

I believe the sprocket size on the 1999 was 18 tooth. The subsequent years switched to a 19 tooth front sprocket. I dropped to an 18 on the front for my 2001 and have been very happy with it. When I was shopping for sprockets and such a couple of years ago, the stock set was 19/43. There is some info on the sprockets at: www.triumphnet.com. Click on the Sprint ST FAQ's and then go to the bottom link of the FAQ page for Chain / Sprocket. BTW, it is a 108 link chain. When I bought my chain two years ago (from a honda kawa shop), it was somewhere around 118 links or something. I layed both chains on the floor, measured them up and then cut off the links I didn't need.

I found that you can buy a stock set for a reasonable price, but that is the 19/43 combo. If you change to a different front sprocket, it seems to bump the price some.

FWIW

Bil, assuming that it is the stock set up, you should be able to remove the front sproket cover and read the number of teeth on the sproket without actually pulling the sproket. It should be stamped in the sproket. At least it is on my 01.

Sorry I cant be more helpful than that.

Thanks for the reply Dan,

I'm still having trouble nailing down the stock gearing, our chart and
several others out there haven't been updated since the '00-'01 model
years and I thought I'd seen somewhere that the '02-'04 had changed to
either an 18 or possibly a 17. Hate to have to pull the old one off
before ordering to find out!

A post a long time back indicated MotorcycleOnlineStore.com as a good
source, and they did get me a cut to length DID 530ZVM2 for the VFR so
will likely order from them again, once I get the sprockets nailed down.

Anyone got a good source of gear info that's up to date?
