Hey just a couple of things Z.
Check the cable and make sure that there is no preload on the clutch, 
but also check the mechanism, as there is always the possibility that 
it is bound up or damaged.
Second the harm may already be done, the misadjustment could have 
prematurely worn out the clutch.

third, if the motor has ever had the energy conserving oil in it the 
clutch may have already been done in. I have seen the posting of 
frustrated Honda VFR riders that have been there.
