Re: [ST] ST1050 Front Brake recall...?

I got my recall notice for the suspension link bolt in the mail the other day. I'm taking it in tomorrow. When I called about the recall the dealer said, "Oh, the recall for the front brake?" Um, no, for the rear drag link bolt. Sigh.
Anyway, I must have an early build because it falls under the vin listed for the front brake issue as well. Also, several months ago while talking to Triumph customer service on the phone, I mentioned that the front windscreen film was flaking off. The guy said that was an issue on the early builds and they thought they had caught all of the defective ones at the factory. Obviously not. He said, in fact, he had stacks of the windscreens in his office for months while they were doing the replacements.
I'm really starting to think about getting rid of the ST, and getting the 675 for fun and an FJR for touring.

What you describe initially isn't a recall. It appears to be a move by
Triumph to cater for rider preference.

The latter thing is something else. In the UK, VOSA have a website
http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/default.asp where you can
search for recalls that they are party to but a search could not bring
up their request for info that you allude to.

>>> gavin.lawrie@xxxxxxxxx 01/25/07 00:19 AM >>> Today's edition of UK motorcycle rag Motorcycle News is carrying a story that Triumph has recently sent out an email to all (?UK?) dealers advising of the need to replace front brake components on some ST1050 and 1050 Speed Triple bikes. Apparently Triumph are only going to do the repair if the customer asks, and apparently are not planning to announce the scheme to customers...

MCN are notorious for taking a rather paranoid attitude to most
things, but all the same, thought any 1050 owners out there might be
keen to know about it. It is not being carried on the MCN web site.

The article concerns Speed Triples prior to VIN 253302 and ST1050s
prior to VIN 253133. ON the Speed Triple the problem is fixed
apparently by fitting a new 'coated caliper pistons to front
calipers' and for the ST 1050 by fitting a new 'master
cylinder' (presumably to the front brakes). Bikes after these VIN
numbers had the modification made at factory.

The article quotes Triumph as saying "The 1050 ST brakes are tuned
for a 'gradual resistance feel'. We have concluded however that some
riders prefer a more 'solid' feel. Triumph has therefore informed
its dealers that customers wishing to change the original factory
settings of the front brake feel may be offered an alternative master
cylinder under warranty." (etc. with more details of Speed Triple.).

Triumph's response is a little odd - MCN reports at least one rider
is nursing injuries apparently resulting from brake failure on a
1050ST, and the UK Vehicle Operator Services Agency (which appears to
have some role in ensuring bikes are safe) is investigating the
ST1050 (and has called for consumer experience reports).
