Dan,

I'm not sure how comfortable you are with electricity but one thing that 
you can do is attach a multimeter to your battery terminals (alligator 
clipped leads help with this) and measure the voltage at idle, it should 
be just over 12VDC.  Then run the motor up through the rev range and you 
should see the voltage rise.  I can't remember the exact figures but I'd 
guess that if it doesn't get up to around 14VDC your not getting much 
charge out of your alternator.  Actually, I just checked the ST FAQ at 
triumphnet and there's some verbage in there about the voltage at the 
battery being 13.8VDC so I guess my memory isn't shot after all.
