Re: [ST] A Brotherhood

Too true. There is a Hawklist member, name of Mark Zack, who was cut
off by an inexperienced left-turning driver last Fall. He nearly died,
experienced a coma, and lost his right arm. But he's alive because he
was fully geared up.

He and his wife just attended the East Coast Hawk Rally in VA "riding" a
BMW Z4 convertible (and wearing PMA shirts like: I'd give my right arm
to be ambidextrous!). He's working on converting one of his bikes to
left-hand usage with the advice of another one-armed Hawker.

The gear can be a life saver. The last month of my life has been taking
care of my wife as she recuperates from a low speed MC accident (if
there is such a thing). Whe was wearing a Cortech MC jacket and a HJC
SyMax helmet. Those two things probably did more to save her life than
anything else.

Details:

She went off the side of the road on the Skyline Drive her in VA (mile
marker 35.3) and hit the stone wall. She did this at about 30mph on a
Yamaha Road Star 650. After she hit the wall she tumbled down the
embankment about 37 feet (per the park ranger). I was there and she
was beat up pretty bad. The jacket and the helmet saved her life, the
medics that helo'd her out of there said they wish they saw more people
were the gear she was wearing. BTW, even with the gear, she ended up
with 2 pins, two plates, 20 screws, 4 broken bones, skin grafts, and
rebuilt knee and ankle. She suffered all of her injuries on her right
side, except for a gash on her left thigh. If she had MC boots on she
probably wouldn't have beaten up her ankle as bad as it was. If she
didn't have the jacket on or the full face helmet, I bet she would be
pushing up daisies right now. I couldn't image what would have happened
with a 1/2 helmet and a t-shirt. One month later she is now in rehab
and
progressing very well. She has stated that she will get back on a MC
when she can.

Apart from our ethnic, religious, political, opinionated etc.
backgrounds we all have one thing in common that brings us together as a
brotherhood:
Our love of motorcycles!

As such, I found myself compelled to stop my air conditioned cage and
help a fellow brother whom I saw felled his steed in sand and gravel.
He was ok. Just cuts and abrasions on his right side (hand, arm, leg).
No he wasn't wearing a helmet or proper riding gear. If he had, only
the bike would have been hurt.
But this isn't to judge. Like I said in opening: all things aside we
are a brotherhood.

It seemd to be a low speed (5-10 MPH) off, but even at that speed he got
cut up pretty good. Nothing appeared deep though. Really made me see
the need to cover up with boots, gloves, long pants, long sleeves, and
most important a HELMET (even though he head was untouched).

On a 90+ summer day I know it is real easy to justify not covering up
because of the heat. I know I've done that before But now I see I'd
rather die of heat than bleed all over.

So from one brother to another, lets all ride smart with the proper
safety gear because the unexpected can always happen. Even to the best
rider. I don't want to have to stop to help another brother bleeding
everywhere because he/she wasn't wearing the proper safety gear.

RIDE SAFE & SMART EVERYONE SUMMER IS HERE TO ENJOY :-)
