They are useless. As you say the lubricant of choice just goes all over the
place EXCEPT where it should.

I agree (at least on the first part!).
I must've bought mine 20 yrs ago at a m/c shop thinking that this was a
great tool for lubing b/c & m/c cables. In reality, 99% of the lube sneaks
out the side of the rubber gasket and makes a mess on the exterior of the
cable housing, your hand and whatever else is in close proximity!

I have NEVER had one of those work properly :)
