I don't think this problem was ever resolved

to do so would have required them to create a non-linear scale on the sender
itself (or to mark the graduations on the gauge differently) due to the
shape of the tank (the level of the gas itself drops slowly to begin with
and then speeds up since the bottom portion of the tank holds less gas)
