Re: [St] Optimate charger

I've had one (an Optimate III) for a few years.

It is just one of several broadly similar battery chargers /
maintainers - not entirely sure what it actually does, but has some
groovy lights on top that give limited info on battery health / status.

In addition to trickle charging a battery it seems to have a couple of
other functions. One is it appears to periodically stop charging and
do a volt drop test over time (about half an hour) and depending on
results does stuff - though quite what that is I'm not sure. The
manufacturers claim that it can over time improve / recover poorly
conditioned batteries.

Mine came with a little cable that you can connect to the battery that
allows you to easily plug the device into your bike when you park it
up (mine is in garage - not sure how weather proof it is, so not sure
if you can use this if bike not under cover.

It has worked without problem since I got it. Keeps battery fully
charged, but nonetheless I have had to change the battery once (in
four years). So while it may extend life, doesn't appear to prevent
them wearing out eventually. My guess is it is probably more use if
you don't ride every day.

HTH.
