Also remember that the 99ST came with an 18t front sprocket, so putting a 17t on is not a huge jump. I was even considering going up another tooth or two on the rear as well as the 17t front. Like I said the amount of top end speed you "sacrifice" is not really noticeable unles you are planning on doing balistic speeds.

Cruising on the high way in top gear at low revs and getting good fuel economy is still easily done.

your calculations for the two final drive ratios are correct, but dropping 2
teeth up front is equivalent to adding 5 teeth to the rear, not 8

43/19 = 2.263

43/17 = 2.529
48/19 = 2.526

the rule of thumb I use is that each tooth removed from the front sprocket
is roughly equivalent to an additional 2.5 teeth on the rear sprocket
