Re: [St] 2006vs2008

When I moved continent I had no choice but to sell my 2001 955 ST and look
for another bike in 2007. I test rode a few bikes in Europe (usual culprits
VFR, Beemers etc even a R1) and have to say that the ST 1050 (I got a deal
on a 2006) came out streets ahead of the opposition- *for what I wanted*.
The 955 and 1050 are VERY different bikes. IMHO the 955 is a better tourer.
I could do 600 km a day no problem and the fuel economy was great. Two-up
was very comfortable. But I also wanted a bike with a bit more ooomph, that
was better on corners and handled better. The 1050 does that and more. The
engine is significantly more powerful (I also have the race exhaust) and the
handling *much* sharper. I used to take the 955 on the track, but it
struggled on all counts. In contrast, the 1050 has turned many a head at the
track. It also tours well, especially on fast bendy bumpy roads where the
955s suspension struggled, but is not as economical (that performance comes
at a price) or as comfortable two-up.

So, yes, IMHO the 1050 is a better bike for most things that I wanted.

Horses for courses I guess.

My 02 cents and other disclaimers apply :)
