Re: [St] Helmet age...

It was explained to me at one point (can't recall the source) that the
oils produced by the scalp have a "corrosive" effect on the Styrofoam
in the liner. I also use a helmet liner every time, so I'm sure that
would reduce the presumed effect.

And there's also the frowned-upon practice of hanging your helmet on the
handlebar, which has the potential to partially crush the Styrofoam one
spot at a time, leaving that much less for your head to compress.

Personally, I feel better about the 5 year replacement schedule. And
new ones can fit better, have better cooling, potentially lighter, etc.

I just rolled 5 years this September, time to go shopping.

Happy New Year all!

I once read an article in which Helmet age was discussed and one of
The factors for helmet degradation was whether it spent
A lot of time sitting in the sun. I see a lot of helmets sitting on
The back of motorcycles here at work and I am always reminded of
That particular article. I keep mine on my desk where I can admire
The morning bug collection.
Question: What's the last thing that goes through a bugs brain
When he hits your faceshield?
    Answer: His butt.
I don't like to ride without wearing protective. I don't
Even like a trip around the block without gloves. That being said, if
I had any doubts as to the level of protection my helmet provided,
I would just replace it with a newer model. The old axiom of how much
Is your head worth would apply here.

My 2 cents.

Whoops - I have just re-read my boxing day message - and having
discussed things with my brother in law I feel I should have said the
dealer was trying to explain to me that how helmets are looked after is
more important than their age.

Obviously a three month old helmet that has been dropped would be less
protective than a two year old one kept in a box in the cupboard and
only used on public holidays.

I only post on the list occasionally but enjoy the threads and at least
know that even my Christmas ramblings are read!

Happy New Year to everyone
