While a belt system will last longer, it is more easily damaged. A rock 
between the belt and sprocket and the belt has to be replaced. A small nick or any 
damage and its  replacement time.

The other big disadvantage is that you cant just change the gearing easily or 
when you feel like it.

So all our talk of a change of a tooth here or there is not possible with a 
belt system.
