A little late on that one. I am not sure it's specific to pre 02.

On the pre-02 model, the crankcase breather is on the left side of the engine and connects to the left side of the airbox. If your ST falls on it's left side oil can run >out the breather and into the airbox and then down into the #1 cylinder causing a hydraulic lock. It would be worth pulling the plugs to see if there is oil in #1.

I've heard that, and I'm wondering why, and also, why the left side. I
dropped mine on the right and it stayed that way for, oh, about 2 minutes,
and haven't had a problem. What is it about the left side?
