Yep, you can create routes and download them.  You can put in way points too.  It all depends on what you want to do.  

For me it depends on where I'm going.  The wife and are heading out on a ~2,000 mile trip in a week and I have created the routes I want to take and downloaded them.

One of my favorite things to do is select a destination and tell the GPS to get me there.  I'll tell it to avoid major roads, tollways etc.  That way I wind up on back country roads most of the time.  If I don't like the route I change my heading and let the GPS recalculate a route.  It's shown me numerous roads I never knew existed.

I still carry paper maps when I travel long distances..  They both have draw backs but together the kick a$$.  Besides I like studying maps just to what's out there.
