transients can also be introduced at times other than when the connections
are made or broken, and this is the primary reason for suggesting that it is
better to leave the car ignition off when using a car's battery to jumpstart
a motorcycle

the chance of any damage occurring if you ignore this precaution is still
small, but shit happens...

other than that, I agree about the fact that the load of the bike system is
what determines the current (amps) that will be drawn from the doner car
battery

any car battery that is in a reasonable state of charge should be more than
capable of delivering the required current

if you are still having trouble getting the bike's engine to turn over, I
would suggest considering the quality of the electrical connections, and/or
the gauge/quality of the jumper cables themselves
