I remember how small import cars became more popular in the late 70s and early 80s after the gas shocks of that era. However, it didn't take long after gas got relatively cheap again for people to go buy SUVs and trucks that they rarely really needed. Now we have all these road monsters blazing along our highways at maximum speeds, and their drivers whining about how much it costs to fill their huge fuel tanks.

I am thinking about using my RS to commute sometimes this year once the weather gets a bit drier here in the Great NorthWet. 50 mpg is better than the average 25-26 in my Honda Prelude. Additionally, given that I own it, I would not need any additional investment. Though it would have excess performance and weight compared to a smaller bike, the difference in mileage would make another investment even harder to justify. Besides, my dear, sweet wife thinks a One Motorcycle Rule is a good idea. I never understood it, but I love her anyway. ;-)
