like I said in an earlier post John, the concept is right, but your
explanation is incorrect
if a 43 rear/18 front combination gives a ratio of 43/18=2.39, the question
is how many teeth on the rear sprocket would be required to achieve the SAME
ratio with the original, 19-tooth front sprocket
the answer is x/19=43/18, where x=(19)(43/18)=45.39
the point here is that the ORIGINAL sprocket ratio (assumed to be 43/19)
does not enter into the calculation at all

Stock gearing is 19/43 ( in some cases 18/43). The
ratios are:
43/19 = 2.26
43/18 = 2.38
Going down one tooth on the front is equal to going up
2 1/3 teeth on the back. Of course with chain links,
your options are whole numbers...
