I think the reason they use (R+M)/2 in the U.S. and Canada is to attempt to
eliminate the confusion over the difference between RON (Research Octane
Number) and MON (Motor Octane Number), but since most of the rest of the
world uses RON anyway, they actually ended up adding to the confusion
I just couldn't relate to CLC (still a mystery) and AKI (Anti-Knock Index)
I always look for 89 on the pump here in Canada
anyway, it's all explained here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating
cheers

what Triumph specifies (or U.S. 89 CLC/AKI, whatever that means)
Sorry I should have written mid-grade, since regular gas in this area can
actually vary from 84 to 87 octane.
I often wonder if there is any value in the averaging method that the US
uses to estimate the octane at the pump???
The rest of the world uses the RON only numbers and they seem to get by
just fine.
