Thanks Terry and Jay, I'll try and have a look at the left-hand switch 
gear and ignition wiring tonight.  I wonder what the solution is if it's 
the ignition wiring, splice in new wire?  Or is it possible to replace 
this section of the harness easily?

And I haven't ruled out the battery entirely but the fact that when it 
fires it fires strongly seems to point to other things.
