Re: [St] Need guidance on 12K service

I inserted what I do on mine (2002).

Fred

Fellow Triumphalists,

My 2000 ST is about to click over 12,000 miles, and qualify for the BIG
SERVICE. Based on time interval (every 2 years or 12K miles) I'm already way
overdue for some of these things. But my question is: what is really
necessary? I normally handle oil changes, chain lube and so on myself.

Here's the list:

1. Check/adjust battery electrolyte level
if sealed battery, it's impossible
2. Inspect for fuel system leaks or deterioration (replaced connectors 2 yr ago)
Whatever. If it leaks that's smells in the garage.
3. Renew fuel filter
depends strongly on the quality of the gaz (lot of dirt or not). The ducati one is less expensive.
To get to it remove the plate unscrewing each screw 1/4 turn per 1/4 turn. The other way around for re-mounting.
4. Inspect cooling system
generally inspecting the coolant level is equivalent but it's just a matter of glance
at all hose termination for dry coolant sign.
5. Inspect for oil leaks
not difficult
6. Inspect throttle cable/adjust
never did it
7. Inspect brake pads
for sure, and on a regular basis not only at 12k
8. Check/adjust clutch cable
Should be done more often, but just a matter of being confortable w/ the clutch.
9. Renew air cleaner element
I did it but feel that a air compressor cleaning would have been sufficient.
10. Inspect wheels for damage
not too hard, but when you clean your bike you do it.
11. Inspect tires
same
12. Change oil/oil filter
for sure
13. Adjust plugs
on mine (2002) if I adjust the plugs I kill them
14. Check/adjust valve clearances
very important point especially on pre 2002 where the clearance seems to evolve more.
15. Inspect drive chain for wear and adjust
I hope you do that lot more often
16. Lube drive chain
same
17. Lube rear wheel bearings
Yes. It's a pain in the a** but necessary. Not too much complicated though.
18. Inspect steering head bearings
checking for no play w/ the front wheel up is OK.
19. Check steering operation
same lock to lock
20. Inspect forks
for leak, yes
21. Lube headstock bearings
that's low priority as the grease doesn't go so fast away from those
22. Renew fork oil
I didn't. It's a matter of handling and bouncing problem.
23. Check/adjust throttle body synch
Really necessary if the vales are adjusted. Gets the bike smoother.
24. Download latest tune (has tune for off road pipe already)
NOT necessary if you're happy w/ your current one
25. Reset stepper position
??Could be due to the fact that it's open loop (no O2 sensor). Thats the problem w/ the pre 2002.
That's linked to the CO rate adjustment which is mandatory on pre 2002.
26. Inspect all fixings/retorque as needed
Do you do that on a car? inspecting if something broke loose doesn't hurt though.
27. Reassemble and road test 28. Renew all brake pressure and dust seals
I didn't. Inspecting all the pistons is a good point.
29. Renew brake fluid
Yes for sure. Should be done at least every 4 years. Fluid color is a good indication
30. Renew coolant (changed two years ago)
I would do it as it' important for the long term health of the bike. Changing it every 4 years shouldn't hurt though.
31. Lube swinging arm bushings (3-year schedule so I'm two lubes behind)
Never did it.
32. Renew all brake hoses (four year schedule)
That's crazy. They even say to change the brake piston and that's not so crazy because on mine
one front piston got corroded and stuck the brake. There's no rubber boot as on a car.

By the way, the bike runs and rides just fine right now. I put Hayabusa
calipers on the front: awesome!

Your advice much appreciated.

In conclusion I would say that 14 and 17 are very important. For 17 it's the roller bearing on the right. Double check also for the rear bearing play.
