Re: [St] Wax or oil?

Interesting point.

Way back when I was riding my first road bikes I used to be really fussy about putting lots of chain lube on. I couldnt figure out why I was getting bugger all mileage from my chains and sprockets, until a mechanic explained that I was over lubing and creating a grinding paste that was not having the desired effect.

Now I'm far less fussy. My current bike has hit 60k kms and I'm almost due for its third set of chains and sprockets.

Brett.

Too late ;-) This is just as bad as an oil thread. It's a topic that has as many opinions as there is products.

I think the simplest, cheapest, and easiest to clean is non-detergent HD30 motor oil. Many other products are too sticky, hard to clean fly-off, and (because they are sticky) are a sand and dirt magnet.

Based on my race experience & knowing a guy who have more motorcycle experience than I (and is an MSF instructor) I now us the non-detergent HD30 motor oil. One qt lasts a long time too>

I don't think this counts as an oil thread, since I'm asking about chains
here. If it does, go ahead and ban me now.

I'm just wondering which chain lubrication you prefer and why. I only ask
because I ran out of oil (my can spritzed it last sprat) yesterday just
before I was going to take a nice leisurely ride across the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge Tunnel. I ran out to the local bike shop and decided to try out a
can of wax. I like it! It seems my chain is smoother and not as notchy
(not that it was bad before, it just feels like there's a smoother
engagement now than with the oil).

Am I in trouble?
