I have never bought a bike I couldn't test ride, and like you have walked
away from dealers who don't give them.
I have taken many test rides and I have never, ever damaged a bike on one.
On the other hand, I have had three bikes dropped by mechanics while they
were in for servicing.
So the next time I hear from a dealer that I can test ride it after buying
the bike, I will reply I'd be happy to have that arrangement. I'll just
expect him to buy my bike back from me before I bring it in for service,
and then if I like the service that was performed, I'd be more than willing
to buy it back from him.
