Bob,
While chaffed wiring *could* be your problem, I'd check for a dirty
connection at the plug on the sender pigtail.  Often the problem can be
cured by simply unplugging and replugging a time or two.

As to recalls, my recollection is that the only sender recall was for
leakage due to improper assembly by the vender.
