From Scott's FAQ: "Each oil filter we have dissected has had a bypass
valve, as does ours."
That doesn't mean I like their product. Paper filters have the
advantage of absorbing material in 3D, and a 10 micron particle might
rattle around your engine through a few dozen cycles before it gets
stopped by a tiny hole in the paper, whilst in the metal mesh it will
never get stopped.
Don't let 'average is worse than absolute' work on you, as it's just a
statistician's warcry. No doubt there are strengths and weaknesses in
both types of filter.
