If you want a really fun ride avoid PA entirely and take 88 south from Wheeling (I70) to jct 250. Take 250 south to jct 50. Then ride 50 east to Winchester. You can slab it north to Hagerstown or whatever from there. I don't know that area at all, but concur that 30 sucks east of Chambersburg.
