i have made the acquaintance of several Iron Butt Rally finishers. a
coupla years back i did an SS1000; in fact, that's why i got an ST. my
shopping list for a longer-legged bike was "100hp, 200 mile range, good
handler". i had no idea the parking spot would be filled by a bike i enjoy
as much as the ST. but i digress.
i got flak on another list [Delphi's motorcycle tourer's forum] for taking
the Gary Eagan / Ducati UCC ride to task. my point was that in getting it
on radio talk shows and CNN, it was presented in a way that makes long
distance look irresponsible. i was hammered because Gary is a respected
member of the LD community, and the IBA only takes exception to
'sponsorship' in the Rally proper. but i recall the Ducati ad campaign
from Gary's earlier ride, and i expect the flavor to be repeated,
especially since he set a record.
long distance riding is not irresponsible, people are. the guy who
finished the Iron Butt Rally on a Honda scooter was certainly exhausted
beyond a safe limit, but doing 1,000 or even 1,500 miles in 24 hours, on
our bikes and our Interstates, is not really hard. last fall i ran from
Oklahoma to Georgia and back, an SS2000, with no trouble - and did it by
minimizing pit stop time [yes, i did a few "entertaining roll-ons", but
their effect on the average was minimal].
ride and enjoy.
