No worries Craig, I'm just havin' fun cussin & discussin :))))
We probably don't have that big a difference of opinion on tire pressures
and their relative effect on tire life/ wear etc.......... I guess I was
taking the extreme POV on under inflation just for the sake of debate :)
Certainly reducing the pressure by a few pounds would not adversely effect
tire life, but by the same token I cannot envision it ~increasing~ the life
of the tire either :))
People reduce the tire pressure at the track for various reasons; better
traction, quicker heat buildup, maybe others. But certainly they do NOT
decrease pressure for longer tire life.
Most LD riders I know run their tires a maximum recommended pressure (or
very near it) to achieve the most mileage from the tire.
So in answer to the original question, will lowering the tire pressure
increase the remaining mileage available on a nearly worn out tire, I still
say "NO". If it does not increase mileage on a "new" tire, what logic would
indicate that it would help once the tire is worn??? :)) I hear you on
the larger contact patch theory, I just ain't buying it. :))
Now if "our hero" were out in the Texas Panhandle, riding in a 50mph
crosswind, I would say he could double his mileage, if he could stay upright
at a 30 degree angle (bfg). (Don't ask me how I know this).
