Rear Wheel Removal

Can someone tell me if the muffler needs to be moved or removed before the rear
wheel can be removed. I have panniers with the muffler in the down position.
It looks as though I will be unable to install the socket without removing the
muffler first. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.
