Sorry to hear about you incident :-)

but since you asked, personally, I have heard of several people who have had
rims repaired with no problems, but on the other hand, I personally would not
risk it. $500 is a shite load of money, but, that also is probably close to
the deductable on you bike. IOW, if it fails and you go down, you will still
be out $500. 

AFAIK, and I am sure there are people who know more than I. The alloys
generally used for objects such a wheels are generaly designed to have a bit
of flex, when you heat, out right bend such materials you stand a good chance
of changing those properties. Generally making them more bittle. So if you do
get it fixed, next time you hit the rock the rim might break in stead of
bending, thus possibly creating a much worse situation. 

This is the same reason why, unless the powder coat in question requires very
low temperatures to cure, I would only re-powder coat a wheel once or twice
at the most.
